CONTEST FINALISTS

EMMY

Emmy has spent her entire professional career in the non-profit sector, working to make the community a better place. Presently, she leads the team as CEO of the Zebra Child & Youth Advocacy Centre in Edmonton, the first child advocacy center in Canada, supporting kids who have experienced abuse.

Emmy is doing all she can to get a new Zebra Centre funded and built this year, allowing for a better habitat to help the kids who come to Zebra. The new Zebra Centre is a 30,000 sq ft, child-friendly facility that will open later this year and is very much needed as the current space is bursting at the seams as the Zebra Centre is helping over 4,000 kids annually.

Emmy's team is incredible, but the role-modeling and support she shares to lead them makes all the difference. She is a manager, a cheerleader, a project manager, a fundraiser, a strategist, a communicator and a change-maker.

Emmy hasn't taken a real vacation in a long time, even on her days off, she is responding to the needs of the Zebra Centre. Emmy loves brunch, and while there is time for a nice brunch out a few times a month, it would be an incredible treat for Emmy to get away for a special brunch vacation and recharge her battery for a few days before the Zebra Centre opening this autumn.

SPENCER

With 13 years of experience as a paramedic, Spencer has not only saved lives but has also significantly influenced the mental health landscape for fellow paramedics in Alberta. Among his proudest achievements is the establishment and coordination of the Paramedic Peer Support Team for Medavie Health Services.

As the Team Lead, Spencer has cultivated a culture of mental wellness. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by first responders, he emphasizes the importance of prioritizing mental health within their profession. Through peer support initiatives, mental health education, access to counseling, regular check-ins, and advocacy for flexible scheduling and workload management, Spencer has helped create a safe environment where paramedics can openly address their struggles. His leadership has not only mitigated burnout and reduced the risk of conditions like PTSD but has also fostered overall well-being, enabling first responders to fulfill their duties sustainably.

Spencer's dedication to dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health in the workplace is truly commendable. By sharing his own experiences and advocating for accessible mental health services, he has humanized the issue and fostered a culture where seeking support is not only normalized but encouraged. For his exemplary leadership and dedication to making a positive impact on the community, he stands as a remarkable role model.

PEARL

Pearl, though she may not scale mountains or jump from planes, looms larger than life in a high-needs K-3 school! As an Educational Assistant, she is dedicated to offering love, care, and support to all the students, many of whom arrive at school hungry. Pearl's days at school are spent feeding the masses. Every Monday, she arrives with bread distributing it to the students and families to ensure they have food at home. Pearl arrives at the break of dawn, well before the kids arrive to ensure she has time to prepare something fresh to fill their bellies.

If there were a way to eradicate hunger worldwide, Pearl would undoubtedly roll up her sleeves and dive in. She embodies extraordinary dedication to the students, serving as their safe place. To many, she's like a grandmother, offering solace to those suffering from various forms of trauma. Her selflessness knows no bounds. Pearl ensures every child feels included and loved.

Her generosity extends beyond the students. Pearl organizes a weekly group of students to gather bottles and juice boxes from around the school, exchanging them at the depot to raise funds for two different animal rescues.

Pearl's impact on the community is profound, making her truly deserving of recognition. Raised with the value of giving back, she showers love daily, and deserves to have some of that love returned to her.
