Four Generations of Canadian Farming: The Family Behind OEB’s Duck Confit

When guests enjoy OEB’s Confit de Canard or Pierogies & Duck, they’re experiencing more than a chef-crafted brunch dish. Behind every forkful of our duck confit is a Canadian family that has spent more than 75 years dedicated to raising exceptional ingredients.

At OEB, we believe great brunch begins with great Canadian ingredients. Home Grown celebrates the producers whose passion and craftsmanship help bring our menu to life. One of those partners is King Cole Ducks—a fourth-generation, family-owned business whose commitment to quality mirrors our own.

A Legacy built over four generations

King Cole Ducks began in 1951, when Jim and Marg Murby purchased a 100-acre farm in Aurora, Ontario.

What started as a small family operation has grown into Canada’s largest duck producer, spanning more than 1,200 acres across multiple farm locations. Despite that growth, one thing has never changed: the business remains family-owned and operated, with four generations of the Murby family carrying forward the same values of hard work, innovation and pride in producing exceptional food.

For OEB, that’s exactly the kind of partner we’re looking for. Because behind every great dish is someone who cares deeply about every step that came before it.

Three generations of farmers

built on shared values

At OEB, every ingredient has to earn its place on the plate. That’s why we partner with suppliers who care as deeply about their craft as we do.

For more than 75 years, King Cole has remained committed to quality, innovation and doing things the right way. As a vertically integrated operation, they oversee every stage of production—from breeding and farming to processing and preparation—allowing them to maintain exceptional consistency and care every step of the way.

Their ducks are raised in spacious, free-run barns with fresh feed and water, while generations of farming knowledge continue to guide every decision they make. It’s a philosophy rooted in caring for the land, the animals and the food they produce.

That same commitment is why King Cole has remained a trusted partner for OEB.

innovation born from necessity

One of the things that makes King Cole unique is that they didn’t stop at farming.

When they set out to create premium, fully cooked duck products, they couldn’t find a production partner capable of delivering the level of quality they envisioned. Rather than compromise, they built their own.

That investment became King Cole Kitchens—a 15,000-square-foot artisanal cook facility specializing in small-batch, chef-quality proteins prepared using techniques like sous vide, slow roasting and hardwood smoking.

What began as a solution for their own duck products quickly evolved into a trusted culinary partner for innovative food brands across North America.

Today, that same dedication to craftsmanship extends into OEB’s kitchens. King Cole Kitchens produces the tender duck confit featured in several of our signature dishes and the slow-braised short rib found in our Get Shorty Rib Breakfast Poutine, bringing the same attention to quality, consistency and flavour to every bite.

From Their Family to Your Table

At OEB, we believe the ingredients behind every dish deserve just as much attention as the recipes themselves.

That’s why we seek out partners like King Cole—Canadian producers who share our commitment to quality, craftsmanship and doing things the right way, even when it’s the harder path.

Whether it’s the duck confit in our Confit de Canard and Pierogies & Duck, or the slow-braised short rib in our Get Shorty Rib Breakfast Poutine, every ingredient reflects the care and expertise of the people who made it possible.

Because every great brunch has a beginning. At OEB, ours starts on Canadian farms, with families who care as much about every ingredient as we do.
